Metin2 Black Magic Sura Guide: Magic Damage and Group War Role
The Black Magic Sura is the branch of the Sura class that takes magic away from the sword and devotes it to dealing damage from range. If you play a Black Magic Sura in Metin2, your power doesn't come from a single hit but from the spells you unleash on a crowd at the right moment. This guide covers the skills, which defenses reduce magic damage, stat and bonus priorities, and where you should stand in a guild war. The information follows the official servers; Pvp servers can change skill values and class balance.
What sets the Black Magic Sura apart from the Weaponry Sura?
With the skill group choice, a Sura goes down one of two branches. The Weaponry branch loads magic into the sword and fights right up against the opponent, while the Black Magic branch deals damage from range with dark and fire spells. If you prefer melee, our Weaponry Sura guide may suit you better. The official wiki's English, German and Romanian Sura pages recommend Black Magic for Pvp and Weaponry for killing monsters. Black Magic's area spells also pay off in crowded fights; since it fights from range, it calls for good use of distance and timing.
Skills and what they do
| Skill | Effect | Max. targets (official) |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Strike | Hurls dark force at the enemy; at 7 seconds, its cooldown is the shortest | 5 |
| Flame Strike | Burns enemies with an explosion | 15 |
| Spirit Strike | Hurls dark spirits and has a chance to slow | 9 |
| Dark Orb | Deals the highest damage of the core skills but has a 24-second cooldown | 9 |
| Flame Spirit | Summons a flame spirit that costs SP while it's active | - |
| Dark Protection | While active, shifts part of the damage you take onto your SP | - |
It's important to know how Dark Protection works: according to the official wiki, while it's active, a third of the damage you take comes off your SP instead of your HP, and the share passed to SP shrinks as the skill level rises. So it makes you sturdier but also drains your SP; keep your blue potions ready.
On the official servers there's also Death Wave, the 9th skill unlocked at champion level, plus the Boost and Ward skills. These additions are missing on many Pvp servers, especially on 1-99 servers; most of the time you'll play with the six skills above.
How does magic damage work?
All Black Magic attack skills are magical skill attacks. According to the official wiki, this kind of damage isn't reduced by the opponent's armor or defense value; what works against it is Magic Resistance and Resistance against Skill Damage. That's why Warriors who rely on heavy armor are less protected against your spells than against physical attacks. Your own damage is determined by the Magical Attack Value of your weapon and bonuses and by your Intelligence.
Since almost all of your damage comes from skills, put Skill Damage ahead of Average Damage, which boosts regular hits, when you choose bonuses. We explain the difference between these two bonuses in Pvp in our bonus priority article.
Stat and bonus priorities
According to official values, each point of Intelligence gives +2 Magical Attack Value and +20 max SP, and all Black Magic skills scale with Intelligence. Here's the order we recommend:
- Intelligence (INT): Your top priority. It grows both your damage and your SP pool.
- Vitality (VIT): Each point adds +40 max HP; it's also part of the power formula of Dark Orb and Flame Strike.
- Dexterity (DEX): Raises the multiplier on your weapon's attack values and your evasion. Your remaining points go here.
- Strength (STR): The least useful stat for the Black Magic branch.
On your weapon, look for Skill Damage, Casting speed (shortens your skills' cooldowns), Intelligence and Strong against Half Humans, which increases the damage you deal to players. On the official servers, Skill Damage only appears on level 30, 75 and 105 Sura swords. For defense, Max. HP, Magic Resistance against enemy Suras and Shamans, and Sword, Dagger or Arrow Defence, depending on the weapon type that targets you most, are good choices.
Your role in group fights
In a guild war, the Black Magic Sura is the backline caster. To play the role well:
- Stand behind the front line: Keep a sturdy Warrior in front of you while you rain spells from range.
- Wait for the crowd to bunch up: Flame Strike and Dark Orb hit several targets; use them when opponents gather together.
- Slow whoever runs at you: The slow effect lowers the target's movement speed for a while. With Spirit Strike, you buy time to get away from a melee fighter.
- Pick armored targets: Since defense doesn't stop your magic damage, you're effective against heavily armored Warriors.
- Manage your SP: With Dark Protection and Flame Spirit active, SP runs out fast; a caster without SP in the middle of a fight is an easy target.
- Stay near your healer: Standing within range of a Healing Force Shaman helps you survive longer.

Frequently asked questions
Which is stronger, the Black Magic Sura or the Weaponry Sura?
It depends on the server's balance and your play style. The official wikis recommend the Black Magic Sura for Pvp and the Weaponry Sura for killing monsters. With its ranged area damage, the Black Magic Sura is also effective in group fights, while the Weaponry Sura, which fights in melee, can be very good in Pvp too at higher levels.
Which stats should a Black Magic Sura raise?
Raise Intelligence first, then move on to Vitality and put your remaining points into Dexterity. Strength is the least useful stat for this branch.
What reduces a Black Magic Sura's damage?
Magical skill attacks aren't reduced by armor or defense. Your opponent's Magic Resistance and Resistance against Skill Damage reduce your damage.
Which weapon does a Black Magic Sura use?
Suras only use one-handed swords. For the Black Magic branch, check the sword's Magical Attack Value; it directly strengthens your skill damage.
