Metin2 Biologist Quests: Rewards and How to Complete Them
Metin2's biologist quests are one of the few ways to give your character permanent bonuses. Bonuses such as movement speed, attack speed, defense and strength against classes aren't tied to any item, so they stay with you even when you change your gear. But the quests take patience: you hand in the required items one by one and wait after each delivery. This guide explains which quest gives which bonus and how to finish the quests faster, based on the setup on the official servers; keep in mind that Pvp servers often change the biologist system.
What are the biologist quests?
Two NPCs give the quests: Biologist Chaegirab in the first villages (Yongan, Joan, Pyungmoo) and Seon-Pyeong in the Valley of Seungryong. Chaegirab also hands out plant-gathering quests at low levels, but the ones that really matter belong to The research of the biologist series, which starts at level 30. You work through the series in order; the next quest doesn't unlock until you finish the previous one. Each completed quest adds a permanent bonus to your character, and Chaegirab's quests also come with a colored Ebony Box. On the Yohara continent, there are separate biologist quests for champion levels as well.
Which quest gives which bonus?
| Level | Item required | Where does it drop? | Permanent reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Orc Tooth x10 | Orcs in the Valley of Seungryong | +10% movement speed |
| 40 | Curse Book x15 | Dark Tormentors and High Tormentors in the Valley of Seungryong | +5% attack speed |
| 50 | Demon's Keepsake x15 | Demon Tower monsters | +60 defense |
| 60 | Ice Marble x20 | Mount Sohan's ice monsters | +50 attack value |
| 70 | Zelkova Branch x25 | Trees in the Ghost Forest | +11% movement speed and +10% defense |
| 80 | Tugyi's Tablet x30 | Snakefield and Land of Giants | +6% attack speed and +10% melee attack |
| 85 | Red Ghost Tree Branch x40 | Red Forest monsters | +10% defense against all classes |
| 90 | Leaders' Notes x50 | Bosses on the old continent | +8% strength against all classes |
| 92 | Malevolence Jewel x10 | Grotto of Exile, floor 1 | +1,000 HP, +120 defense or +51 attack value |
| 94 | Wisdom Jewel x20 | Grotto of Exile, floor 2 | +1,100 HP, +140 defense or +60 attack value |
The quests from 30 to 90 come from Chaegirab, the 92 and 94 quests from Seon-Pyeong. In the last two quests you pick only one of three rewards; to change your choice, you have to reset the quest with a Researcher's Scroll and complete it again. You'll find which maps hold the items you need in our map guide.
How do you complete a biologist quest?
- Take the quest. Talk to Biologist Chaegirab once you reach the level.
- Collect the items. Kill the monsters that drop the required item in the area from the table. You collect the Demon's Keepsakes for the level 50 quest from the monsters in the Demon Tower.
- Hand them in one by one. You give the items to the biologist one at a time, and each delivery can fail. On the official servers you can deliver to Chaegirab once a day and to Seon-Pyeong once every 12 hours.
- Find the quest's special soul stone. In most quests, once you've delivered the required number, you're also asked for a special soul stone that drops from monsters in the same area. In the level 94 quest, this stone drops from Beran-Setaou or its generals.
- Collect your reward. For Chaegirab's quests, you get the reward from Baek-Go; Seon-Pyeong gives out the reward directly.
Items that shorten the wait
- Researcher's Elixir: Greatly increases the chance that the item you hand in is accepted. On the official servers it's found in the Item Shop and in some chests; it doesn't work for the Yohara quests.
- Time Spiral: Cuts the remaining wait until your next delivery by a percentage. The reduction is calculated as a percentage of the remaining time, not of the base time.
- Researcher's Scroll: Resets the level 92 and 94 quests so you can complete them again.
Practical tips for the biologist
- Start as soon as you hit the level. Since the delivery intervals are long, starting late can delay your bonus by weeks.
- Stock up on extra items. Since every delivery can fail, collect more than required so you're never empty-handed when the wait is over.
- Combine it with grinding. The quest items drop on maps that suit your level anyway. The items you pick up while grinding move the quest forward without costing extra time.
- Consider your role for the choice rewards. HP or defense may make more sense for a sturdy front-line character, and attack value for a damage-focused one.
- Use the elixir at the right time. It's more efficient to save Researcher's Elixirs for high-level quests whose items are hard to get.
The biologist on Pvp servers
On Pvp servers, the biologist is one of the systems that varies most between servers. Some servers remove or shorten the wait, some raise the success chance, and others rebalance the rewards to suit their own game. Since bonuses such as movement speed, attack speed and defense against classes make a direct difference in Pvp, these settings can even decide which server you pick. You can learn a server's biologist setup from its description page or ask in the Guides section of our forum. If you like the classic biologist pace, take a look at Medium Hardwork and Oldschool servers.
Frequently asked questions
At what level do the biologist quests start?
On the official servers, The research of the biologist series starts at level 30. Before that, from level 4, Chaegirab also gives plant-gathering quests.
How often can I hand items in to the biologist?
On the official servers, you can deliver to Chaegirab once a day and to Seon-Pyeong once every 12 hours. A Time Spiral shortens this wait.
Are biologist bonuses permanent?
Yes. The bonuses you get from the quests are permanently added to your character and don't disappear when you change gear.
Why isn't the item I hand in being accepted?
Every delivery has a chance to fail. Using a Researcher's Elixir greatly increases the chance of it being accepted.
