Metin2 Fishing Guide: Rods, Bait and Valuable Fish
In Metin2, fishing is a relaxing break from swinging your sword, but it's far from pointless. A Yabby on your hook can double your experience for 30 minutes, a clam can hold a pearl, and a rare Golden Tuna opens the door to valuable rewards. This Metin2 fishing guide explains how to get started, how to upgrade your rod and which fish are worth the most. The information follows the official servers; Pvp servers can change fishing and its rewards.
Getting started with fishing
- Level: On the official servers, you can fish from level 30.
- Fisherman: You buy the rod and bait from the Fisherman NPC, found along the waterside in the first villages (Yongan, Joan, Pyungmoo) and at Cape Dragon Fire.
- Rod: The Fisherman sells the Fishing Pole for 5,000 Yang.
- Location: You can fish in lakes, rivers and seas. According to the official wiki, the fish you can catch may depend on the map.
How do you catch fish?
- Equip the rod. Hold the rod in place of your weapon.
- Put on bait. With the rod in hand, right-click the bait to put it on; you can't fish without bait.
- Cast. Press Space at the water's edge to start the mini-game.
- Win the mini-game. Within 15 seconds, click the fish 3 times while it's inside the circle, which turns red when the fish enters it. Wrong clicks cut your time, so don't rush.
Bait
- Paste and Worm: Bought from the Fisherman. Killing a fish you've caught sometimes gives you a Worm as well.
- Minnow and Freshwater Shrimp: You get them while fishing, and they work as bait.
How do you upgrade your rod?
Every successful catch has a small chance of giving you rod points. When your points reach the threshold for your rod's level, you drag the rod onto the Fisherman to upgrade it. On the official servers, the first upgrade takes 10 points and always succeeds; at the following levels, the success chance is 39%. The points needed rise with every level: going from level 19 to 20 takes 400 points, and level 20 is the highest. If an upgrade fails, you only lose 10% of your points.
The Carbon Fibre Fishing Rod is a timed rod that can't be upgraded; its success chance compares to a +20 rod. The Fisherman can craft it from the required materials, which come from the Kelpie Chest.
Valuable fish
Right-click a caught fish to kill it, or grill it on a Bonfire. When you try to kill it, the fish can die, escape, or give you a Worm, Fishbones or a Clam. The real value lies in the effects of grilled fish:
| Fish | Grilled effect |
|---|---|
| Yabby | +100% experience for 30 minutes |
| Goldfish | +50% experience for 30 minutes |
| Sweetfish | +10% experience for 30 minutes |
| Mirror Carp | 1,000 HP instantly |
| Grass Carp | +20 attack speed for 10 minutes |
| Carp | +20 movement speed for 10 minutes |
| Smelt | +5% strength against monsters for 10 minutes |
| Perch | Removes poison |

Golden Tuna
This extremely rare catch gives you three options:
- Release it: With a low chance, you get a 60-minute Golden Tuna bonus that raises your chance of catching rare fish. But if your armor gets wet, your movement speed can drop.
- Cut it open: With a very low chance, you get a 30-day Carbon Fibre Fishing Rod; otherwise, you may get a Clam, a pearl or a Kelpie Chest.
- Use it as bait: You get the bonus for sure. It only lasts 5 minutes but raises your rare fish chance more than the 60-minute bonus.
Other loot from your rod
Clams can contain pearls, and white, blue and blood-red pearls are among the rod's loot as well. Besides these, hair dyes, the Gold Ring and Lump of Gold that sell to NPCs for a high price, Lucy's Ring, the Sage King's Symbol and Glove, and various chest keys can end up on your hook. Helpful items and events
- Fishing Marble: Shows you the name of what's on your hook. When you see the message that something is on the hook but it's unclear what, that catch is sure to fail, though you can still earn rod points.
- Fishing Book: Gives you a chance at hooking rare fish and shows the name of what's on the hook.
- Fishing Jigsaw: On the official servers, during this event you collect Fish Jigsaw Chests with the fish you catch, and as you complete the jigsaw, you win Golden Fish Chests. We cover other events in our events guide.
Fishing on Pvp servers
On Pvp servers, fishing varies a lot. Some change bait and rod prices, fish effects or the rod's loot; others turn fishing into a Yang source for beginners. On Hardwork servers, rare fish and pearls caught with patience can be worth a lot on the market. Ask for server-specific fishing tips on our forum.
